Questions: Are Dreads Professional?

Thank author of this post/commentI'm in the process of going to school to be a Medical Office Specialist. I have black dreads and the tips are a spicy brown color. I've been thinking about cutting them off before i get my job...b/c im wondering if ill be taken seriously or not. only closed minded ppl think dreads are unsanitary....i was my dreads just as much as i did when i had my reg hair....gosh!

Taking the issue seriously? I think it's something you really need give importance of. Nothing's wrong to have dreadlock hairstyle because it's kind of fashion though. But the fact that you're entering a school and be a Medical Office Specialist, you really have to take into consideration your look. I presume, you will deal with some medical work that needs proper sanitary. You better have a new haircut and carry yourself professionally.

oh common, that's practically racism if they would not consider those beautiful dreads for a medical specialist! they consider people with tattoos right? then why not the dreads? it is also a hairstyle just like the curls or the straight or the bun. they do not have the right to discriminate you Wiedrich, my boy as long as the dreads are washed everyday and does not harbor nits and lice.

I am sure that many educated people understand that dreads are clean enough, or at least can be if the person who has them knows how to take care of them, however I think it is similar to asking if you should wear a suit or other business attire when working in an office in which all the other employees wear business attire. Hairstyles should be viewed as fashion styles. It must suit the need.
