| YouTube: Botswana-UPenn Partnership Uses Mobile Phones, Photos for Medical Consu For the modest cost of mobile telephones with built-in cameras and customized applications, clinicians across Botswana can consult with medical specialists when they want a second opinion. The Botswana-UPenn Partnership is supporting the use of mobile telemedicine in this southern African country, where transportation to hospitals and clinics is often difficult for the sick and injured in remote areas but where mobile telephone infrastructure is excellent. Doctors and nurses who want help with diagnosis or treatment protocols in dermatology, oral medicine, gynecology or radiology can simply upload photographs and patient histories to the Internet, where specialists in Botswana or at the University of Pennsylvania can review the case and answer via e-mail, thus cutting the treatment turnaround time from weeks to a day.
