Answers: My six days old son is in NICU and having trouble swallowing, docs talk

Thank author of this post/commentThrough his stomach. I have no idea how that works and for how long will my son be on it. Today the ENT came and performed a endoscopy on him and said that his left vocal cord has a gap which is making it hard for him to swallow. He said that is the vocal cords don't open and close properly, it's hard to swallow. He also said this is something that usually resolves on it's own and as of now, there is no surgical procedure for it. He didn't give us a time though he said it might get better in a month or it could take time, HOW MUCH TIME? he didn't say, has anyone gone through this or something similar or can anyone tell me something about this feeding tube they will be inserting in his tummy, like how, where and how will it work, is it syringe feeding or will i have to have a pump in his nursery? And what does this tube look like from the outside? Is it something that will need dressing? Any information and thoughts?

I'm really sorry to hear that. I know how hard it is for you to see the situation of your child. Actually in those cases I'm not really sure if there are really surgical procedures tried. But as far as I know, tube feeding will work best to sustain the nutritional needs of the child. So I think it requires greater care not to make it uncomfortable for the patient.

I am sorry for what had happened to your son, maybe its quite hard in your side to see those suffering he has. It was a good idea that you had him check up and find that there is something wrong with him. I have never heard of that disorder but the endoscopy procedure really helped the doctor in knowing what what disorder he has, I hope , he'll get okay soon.

It seems strange to me that there is no medical procedure for solving that. Sure, I am only a layman when it comes to medicine and surgical procedures, but that does sound like something which would be medically possible. I understand why they would not be willing to operate on your child until he is older, as it is possible the problem will correct itself, but I believe something can be done if the problem persists!
