Can I put Mederma on right away, before I even get a scar?

I had a very small surgical procedure done yesterday that resulted in a pencil eraser sized "cut" in my skin. Can I start using Mederma now, to prevent a scar, or do I have to wait until it fully heals? I really, really want to avoid getting a scar. Thank you!
